Tossa de Mar is one of the jewels of the whole Catalunya and this refers to the beaches as well.
There are three beaches in Tossa de Mar;
1. Platja Gran or Playa Grande is the main and biggest beach in Tossa. It is 430 meters long and 60 meters wide. The good thing is the beach is big enough to accommodate everyone even in the high season. The bad thing is there is only one WC for the whole beach and no dressing rooms at all. But for the rest, Platja Gran is simply beautiful.
There is a bar on the beach and only a few meters behind the beach is the main boulevard with tons of cafes and restaurants at hand. The water in Platja Gran is crystal clear and is marked with a European Blue Flag which is another guarantee for the pure water. You can even see small fish drifting through your feet in some spots. There are practically no waves, only some small ones in the evening, which makes it possible to play various water sports right in the water. By the way this will guarantee you a beautiful tan too 😉 .
2. Mar Menuda. If you walk a few meters along the main boulevard to the left from Platja Gran it will get you to Mar Menuda beach. This beach is smaller but still wide enough to feel comfortable and not bother people around you. Mar Menuda has some beautiful rocky spots that make up for a stunning beach photoshoot. Also the sea is a bit more shallow here, so if you have kids or just don’t want to swim deep, come to Mar Menuda. But note there are lots of divers and snorkellers in Mar Menuda and there are even parts of the beach kept exclusively for divers. The beach also has one WC and no dressing room.
3. El Codolar. All of the three beaches in Tossa de Mar are clean and beautiful, but if you are looking for even more romantic and quite spot, you need to go to El Codolar beach. It is the smallest and can accommodate up to 30-40 people maximum. There are big rocks on both sides of the beach and in between is the Balearic Sea. This beach is situated behind the old town, but you will easily find it once you start strolling through the narrow streets of Villa Vella. El Codolar has no WC or dressing room, but still there is a bar on the beach.
Things to Do on Tossa de Mar Beaches
The most popular thing to do in Tossa is the beach tennis. Everyone plays beach tennis in Tossa de Mar. You can buy the tennis staff in town for just 3 EUR. If you are more of a water-addict, you can try diving with professionals from Mar Menuda diving school. Or you can just buy snorkeling mask and enjoy the underwater views all day long. Another great thing to do is to take a boat trip to Cala Giverola, which is another small beach not far from Tossa de Mar. It will cost you 14 EUR, but generally hotels have some discount coupons for these boat trips, so you can check at your hotel. Cala Giverola is an awesome place to spend a day, sunbathe, explore the rocky mountains and have breathtaking views of the beach from above. The boat to Cala Giverola is called “Fondo de Cristal“. It has a glass bottom to watch the underwater while they take you the nearest caves and finally to Cala Giverola. The boat departs from Platja Gran and there you can also buy the tickets.
